Arbor Day

Arbor Day

We’ve been busy with the holidays and haven’t been able to do much around the farm, and consequently haven’t been able to post much. However, we did manage to plant 20 trees, hopefully someday they will grow to replace the ones we lost in the snow storm.

When I say we planted trees it is a bit of an exaggeration, we definitely put plants in the ground that will someday be trees, but they aren’t very “treelike”. We donated to the Arbor Day foundation and received 10 trees, some relatives also donated and sent their trees to us so we ended up with 20 total. The trees are merely twigs with roots, but we are excited about them growing bigger because they are some wonderful varieties including a Golden Rain tree – our favorite.

The sprigs arrived in a bag with hyrdogel in the bottom to keep the roots moist. We planted them in a grid in one of our fields for the winter, they are so small we were afraid we would lose them or cut them down with the lawnmower unless we planted them together. Come spring we will figure out a plan for where we want them on the property, plant them and mark them so they don’t get stomped or mowed.
