A tour of Green Chimneys
The Harlem Valley train line that runs to our town has a major terminus in Brewster, New York, about 30 minutes south of us. Trains run there more regularly that our Wingdale Station, so we find ourselves down there pretty regularly. Until recently the only destination we were aware of in Brewster other than the train station was the Red Rooster Drive-In, and then we found out about Green Chimneys.
Green Chimneys is a non-profit that helps emotionally disturbed children by using animals for therapy. They have an amazing working farm and stables with every variety of goat, horse, chicken, pig, and cow you can imagine. The facility also rehabilitates injured raptors, so there are numerous huge cages and aviaries with hawks, owls, and other beautiful birds of prey in various stages of recuperation.
While the garden and farm are in use for teaching and therapy during the week, the farm is open to the public during the weekends. We took a few hours one weekend and stopped by, the farms are wonderful as there are so many animals and they are clearly comfortable and happy. If you are ever in Putnam County I recommend you stop by.
